Foreword by Cameron Crowe. Introduction by Dave Brolan.

Neal Preston: Exhilarated and Exhausted

"I want the reader at the end of this book to feel like they've just spent a year on the road with Zeppelin with one day off, then six months with Guns 'n' Roses, with one day off and then five years with Bruce Springsteen. Exhilarated and exhausted." -Neal Preston

Neal Preston is one of the greatest rock photographers of all time. Exhilarated and Exhausted is a no-holds-barred complete retrospective of his 40-year career. Produced in collaboration with Preston, this book marks the first time he has allowed unrestricted access to his legendary archive, which is considered one of the music industry’s most significant and extensive photo collections.

This exceptional volume is a who’s who of rock royalty. Preston was the official tour photographer for Led Zeppelin, Queen, Bruce Springsteen and The Who, and has also extensively shot The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson and many more. The book includes his portraits, backstage moments, live performances, post-performance highs and lows, and outtakes.

Preston’s photographs vibrate with a palpable and inimitable intensity. He is a true insider, and the images are brought alive by his accompanying text—a mind-bending insight into life on the road as a rock-'n-roll photographer.

Los Angeles–based Neal Preston (born 1952) is considered the greatest rock photographer alive today. His career spans more than 40 years and his archive is one of the music industry’s largest and most significant photo collections. Cameron Crowe on 'Exhilarated and Exhausted' author Neal Preston

Cameron Crowe on 'Exhilarated and Exhausted' author Neal Preston

“As Neal Preston continues to document … essential artists and the world we love, his work only seems to grow more vital,” Cameron Crowe writes in his Foreword to Exhilarated and Exhausted. “The powerful brew of what was once dangerous and thrilling is often reduced to a term now—‘classic rock.’ But once upon a more clandestine time it wasn’t just a download, it was a life … rock. Many an artist has squandered their original importance, flying into the arms of less substantial work. But these images live on. You can feel the music, the audience, the desperate need to find a place in the world, all of it in these photos because they were curated by the guy who felt it all when he pressed the button on the camera. They’re snapshots of what is most elusive—truth and fun and for that one moment, on that one night, the thrill of belonging.” Pictured here, Freddie Mercury, in 1978. continue to blog

This book is addictive. Pictured here, Elton John in Los Angeles, 1974. Elsewhere in this oversized 336-page rock explosion: Led Zeppelin, Queen, Mötley Crüe, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, The Who, Sid Vicious, Al Green, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin… there's not enough space to go on, but it just gets better. continue to blog
