Damien Hirst: The Complete Medicine CabinetsDamien Hirst: The Complete Medicine Cabinets

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Text by Arthur C. Danto, James Frey. Conversation with Steve Jones.

Published on the occasion of Damien Hirst's exhibition at L&M Gallery, New York, October 2010, the first ever medicine cabinets book is contextualised by the artist's following of the punk movement. The first twelve sculptures in the book are named after the title tracks on the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks album. The front page newspaper spreads punctuating the book from the album's release year (1977) and the year of the cabinets' completion (1989) provide a context for reading James Frey's story poem, Fuck This and Fuck That, which describes the listless protest of a teenage waster. The song titles and cabinet names - No Feelings, Liar and Seventeen - resound with the frustrations of Thatcherite Britain and the violence borne out in daily uprest and anarchy, as depicted in the news: IRA MEN HELD IN BIG SWOOP; RIOT SHIELDS OUT AGAIN and DOCKS JOBS-FOR-LIFE TO BE AXED BY AUTUMN. Hirst's medicine cabinets have long been described as temples of medicinal hierarchies providing nothing more than a short-term cure in the face of death. Viewing the pervasive successes and exploitations of the pharmaceutical industry as a belief system in itself is evidence of our dependency and a form of escapism. Hirst has commented: 'I've always seen medicine cabinets as bodies, but also like a cityscape or civilization, with some sort of hierarchy within it. It's also like a contemporary museum of the Middle Ages. In a hundred years' time this will look like an old apothecary. A museum of something that's around today.'The publication features a radio broadcast interview between Damien Hirst and Steve Jones, the Sex Pistols' guitarist, covering music, girls, money, drugs, drinks and smokes. Thebook's index lists every medicine cabinet ever made and the exhibition itself will include original Sex Pistols memorabilia including album sleeves and t-shirts.

Danto on ScullyDanto on Scully

Published by Hatje Cantz.
Text by Arthur C. Danto.

Influenced by Nietzsche, Hegel and Schopenhauer, the American art critic Arthur Danto (1924-2013) explored theories of representation, coined the term "artworld" and posited the end of a certain history of Western art. One of the art philosopher's primary interests was the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, and he considered the highly esteemed oeuvre of his friend Sean Scully to be its continuation and further development. "Scully's historical importance lies in the way he has brought the great achievement of Abstract Expressionist painting into the contemporary moment," he wrote. Danto devoted a series of essays to the abstract stripe paintings of the Irish artist. This publication assembles these in one volume for the first time, and combines them with illustrations of Scully's paintings, photographs and drawings.

Sarah Sze at The Fabric Workshop and MuseumSarah Sze at The Fabric Workshop and Museum

Published by The Fabric Workshop and Museum.
Foreword by Marion Boulton Stroud. Text by Arthur C. Danto, Jonathan Gilmore, Jeffrey Kastner.

This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of a new work by Sarah Sze (born 1969) at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. Sze's immense and intricate site-specific works are akin to drawings in space, manipulating architectural spaces to profoundly affect the way they are viewed. This work was installed on three floors of the museum, virally traversing the exhibition spaces and creating a narrative that unfolds as viewers navigate the galleries and experience Sze's reflections on time, exploration of movement and investigation of materials. Each gallery floor presents a singular experience, yet viewing all three spaces is cumulative, akin to experiencing separate acts in a theatrical production. The catalogue illustrates multiple views of each gallery floor. Along with essays by Jonathan Gilmore and Jeffery Kastner, this volume includes a 2011 essay on Sze by the late philosopher and art critic Arthur C. Danto.

Arthur C. Danto: Remarks on Art and PhilosophyArthur C. Danto: Remarks on Art and Philosophy

Published by A.S.A.P..
Edited by Marion Boulton Stroud.

What makes something a work of art? This was the question that philosopher Arthur C. Danto (1924–2013) asked himself after seeing Andy Warhol’s "Brillo Box" at a 1964 exhibition at the Stable Gallery in New York City. The philosophy of art was not Danto’s primary area of inquiry at the time, but Warhol’s work prompted him to return to this question over several decades. Danto, professor of philosophy at Columbia University since the 1960s and art critic at The Nation from 1984 to 2009, delivered the previously unpublished lectures presented in this volume at the Acadia Summer Arts Program in Mount Desert Island, Maine, from 1997 through 2009. They explicate the ideas that he set forth in professional philosophical papers and books, including The Transfiguration of the Commonplace (1981), which describes his philosophy of art. Informal yet deeply thought-provoking, these lectures explore how Danto analyzed art through a philosophical lens, yielding an approach that differs from most other contemporary art criticism. Danto’s thoughts on art go beyond formal analysis and taste judgments, instead focusing on questions about the nature of art and attempting to define what a work of art is. These lectures present some of his most notable ideas in terms that those with no training in philosophy can readily understand.

Francesco Clemente: A Private GeographyFrancesco Clemente: A Private Geography

Published by Charta/Mary Boone Gallery.
Essay by Arthur C. Danto.

Francesco Clemente has a natural affinity for painting on paper, and his love of the book-based genres in the visual arts--manuscript painting, livres d'artistes collaborations and artist's books--expresses itself in the fluency of his encounters with paper. Central to his oeuvre, Clemente's works on paper have been the subject of numerous international retrospectives, from the Philadelphia Museum of Art's 1991 touring show, to exhibits at the Pompidou and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Bologna (1999). A Private Geography brings us up to speed with the artist's continued evolution of his familiar themes: love, the human figure, spirituality and its iconography. Created in four years across four continents, the 44 works utilize a range of media, from watercolor to ink to pastel. Motifs include Surrealist scenarios of birds sprouting from a dreamer's head and images of lovers embracing.

Marina Abramovic: The Artist is PresentMarina Abramovic: The Artist is Present

Published by The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Edited by Klaus Biesenbach. Text by Arthur C. Danto, Chrissie Iles, Nancy Spector, Jovana Stokic.

Since the beginning of her career, in Belgrade in the late 1960s, Marina Abramovic has been a pioneer of performance art, creating some of the most important works in the field. Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present accompanies an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art that documents approximately 50 of the artist's ephemeral time- and media-based works from throughout her career. The book also discusses a unique element of the Museum's retrospective, live performance: a new work created for the occasion, and performed by Abramovic herself; and re-creations of the artist's works by other performers—the first such to be undertaken in a museum setting. The book spans over four decades of Abramovic's early interventions and sound pieces, video works, installations, photographs, solo performances and collaborative performances made with the Dutch artist Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen). Essays by Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator of Media and performance art at MoMA, and four distinguished scholars examine Abramovic's ideas of time, duration and the reperformance of performance art as a way to extend it into posterity. The Artist Is Present also includes a CD with audio commentary by the artist that guides the reader through the publication. The artist is present not only in the exhibition but also in the experience of the book.Born in Belgrade just after the end of the Second World War, Marina Abramovic was raised in the Serbian Orthodox Church (her great uncle was a Patriarch and a canonized saint in the Church) and left Yugoslavia in 1976, having already established herself as a performance artist, living in Amsterdam and eventually New York, where she presently lives.

Jeff Koons: Popeye SeriesJeff Koons: Popeye Series

Published by Walther König, Köln.
Foreword by Julia Peyton Jones, Hans Ulrich Obrist. Text by Frederic Tuten, Arthur C. Danto, Dorothea von Hantelmann. Conversation with Julia Peyton-Jones, Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Jeff Koons' Popeye series, begun in 2002, incorporates some of the artist's signature themes and motifs: the surrealistic combination of everyday objects, cartoon imagery, outsized scale, art-historical references and children's toys. The sculptures reproduced here continue Koons' fondness for casting inflatable toys in aluminum—carefully painted to resemble supple plastic—which he juxtaposes here with unaltered everyday objects, such as chairs or garbage cans. The Popeye paintings are complex and layered compositions that combine disparate images both found and created by Koons (including images of the sculptures in the series). The instantly recognizable figures of Popeye and Olive Oyl are central, and recur across several key works within the book. Frederic Tuten, Arthur C. Danto and Dorothea von Hantelmann provide commentary on this fun body of work, which Koons discusses in a conversation with Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Matthew Barney: Contemporary MythologiesMatthew Barney: Contemporary Mythologies

Published by Fondazione Merz/ hopefulmonster Editore.
Edited by Olga Gambari. Text by Alberto Barbera, Guido Curto, Olga Gambari, Beatrice Merz. Interview by Arthur C. Danto, Richard Flood.

New York Times critic Michael Kimmelman has called Matthew Barney "the most important American artist of his generation." Most known for his epic film series Cremaster Cycle (1994-2002) and Drawing Restraint (2005), a feature film made with his partner, Björk, Barney's technically and conceptually fastidious work conflates various personal and universal mythologies into narratives that are famously difficult to unravel. This volume compiles work from Barney's solo exhibitions at Turin's Fondazione Merz and National Museum of Cinema, as well as coverage of the International Festival of Philosophy of Contemporary Art, a collaboration between the Fondazione Merz and the University of Turin for which Barney was featured in conversation with Richard Flood and Arthur C. Danto.

Francesco Clemente: The SopranosFrancesco Clemente: The Sopranos

Published by Charta.
Text by Arthur C. Danto.

Featuring a gold embossed cover, this lovely volume was created in collaboration with Deitch Projects, and presents artist Francesco Clemente's portraits of eight contemporary opera stars who figure prominently in the Metropolitan Opera's 2008-09 season: Diana Damrau, Natalie Dessay, Renée Fleming, Angela Gheorghiu, Susan Graham, Karita Mattila, Anna Netrebko and Deborah Voigt. The results--riveting portraits made within a four-month period--capture each of the divas in character for an upcoming role. Clemente has said about his portraits "I never paint a portrait from a photograph, because a photograph doesn't give enough information about what the person feels." In his essay, the distinguished philosopher-critic Arthur C. Danto writes that Clemente has, through scale and style, "recreated these women into personages of an order that our attitude toward sopranos demands, alive but larger than life, in a space of their own. We, lesser and duller, are exalted by their being. They are not just creatures that belong on stages. They are beings that transform stages into magical spaces in which actions larger than those of life take place. They are epic.”

Leon Golub: Don'T Tread On Me!Leon Golub: Don'T Tread On Me!

Drawings: 1947-2004

Published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts/Griffin Contemporary/Anthony Reynolds Gallery.
Essays by Robert Enright and Meeka Walsh. Interview by Douglas Dreishpoon.

Leon Golub is best known for his large-scale paintings of violence and the abuse of power, scenes as colossal in brutality as they are in size. But, throughout his long career, Golub was a prolific draftsman as well. With subjects ranging from the classical to the erotic, and media ranging from oil sticks, to conte crayons, to inks, to acrylics, Golub's drawings interrogate the condition of our world. His first major drawing period began when he was a student in the 1940s. He began to articulate the figure in motion as he embraced Graeco-Roman sculpture, and in recent years (2000-2004) his drawings became more informal and spontaneous, with subjects ranging from aggression to erotic fun and games. Don't Tread on Me! features beautiful color reproductions and is the first book dedicated exclusively to Golub's provocative mastery of the figure.

Global Village: The 1960SGlobal Village: The 1960S

Published by Snoeck Publishers, Ghent.
Edited by Stéphane Aquin. Essays by Anna Detheridgede and Derrick de Kerckhove. Interviews with Alan L. Bean, Arthur C. Danto, Okwui Enwezor, Yoko Ono, Carolee Schneemann, Ettore Sottsass, Bert Stern, Agnés Varda, Michael J. Watts, Tobias Wolff, et al.

In his 1962 book The Gutenberg Galaxy, Marshall McLuhan wrote the famous words: "The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village." As predicted by the renowned Canadian media theorist, satellite telecommunications, beginning with the first Sputnik launch in 1957, united humanity under a vast "cosmic membrane." An immense web of waves echo information around the planet, and distance and time are abolished. Dreams, upheavals, trends, and conflicts are now experienced on a global scale. Global Village: The 1960s plumbs the depths of those planetary echoes as they resonated throughout the decade in the fields of visual arts, decorative arts, fashion, and architecture. Along with a wealth of images, it contains interviews with diverse key figures of the time, including designer Ettore Sottsass, art critic Arthur Danto, artist Yoko Ono, filmmaker Agn¿s Varda, curator Okwui Enwezor, writer Tobias Wolff, playwright Michel Tremblay, and artist Carolee Schneeman.

What's Fluxus? What's Not! Why.What's Fluxus? What's Not! Why.

Artwork by Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Kate Millett, Tomas Schimit, Ben Vautier, Robert Watts, La Monte Young, George Brecht, Allan Kaprow, Per Kirkeby, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Wolf Vostell. Edited by Jon Hendricks, Thomas Kellein, Joan Rothfuss. Text by Tobias Berger, René Block, Ina Blom, Harry Ruhé, Arthur Danto.

Born of necessity in 1961, fathered by George Maciunas and mothered by the rejection of high art and commerical values, the anti-art Fluxus movement is here recorded with encyclopedic thoroughness. With historical essays by Fluxus artists including George Brecht, Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Allan Kaprow, Per Kirkeby, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik and Maciunas, and critical passages by Arthur Danto, Joan Rothfuss, and others, this book questions what it asks, in true Fluxus fashion.

Andy Warhol: PrintsAndy Warhol: Prints

A Catalogue Raisonné 1962–1987

Published by D.A.P..

Andy Warhol: Prints, in its fourth edition, with corrections, is the definitive scholarly reference source for collectors, auction houses, libraries, curators, academics and art dealers. Andy Warhol spent his career working so prodigiously as to assure long-lasting renown. In the printmaking field alone, his output was prolific, and his appropriation of silkscreen as a fine-art medium forever altered the way prints look. This thoroughly revised and expanded fourth edition of Andy Warhol Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne 1962–1987 traces Warhol's complete graphic oeuvre from his first unique works on paper in 1962 through his final published portfolio in 1987.

More than 1,700 works are illustrated, an increase of 500 from the previous edition of the catalogue raisonné, and complete documentation is provided for each. New additions include a section focusing on Warhol's popular portraits, with documentation of prints that were related to paintings commissioned during the 1970s and 1980s, and a new supplement featuring prints and illustrated books from the 1950s, including the beloved 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy.

An essay by Donna De Salvo addresses Warhol's self-published books and portfolios from the same era. An extensive chronology of printmaking activity, a complete exhibition history, a selected bibliography and a greatly expanded appendix to published prints complete the book.

Regarding Beauty

A View of the Late 20th Century

Published by Cantz/Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
Text by Arthur Danto, Neal Benezra, James Demetrion, Olga Viso.

The lavishly illustrated Regarding Beauty surveys late twentieth-century Western art to address why the timeless notion of beauty has recently been so hotly contested and, in the 1980's and 1990's in particular, so highly politicized.... Regarding Beauty argues that beauty has not disappeared from the dialogue of art and that, on the contrary, it has persisted as an essential element in the evolution of art as the 20th century passes into history.
