Soundings: A Contemporary Score investigates the ways in which some of the most innovative contemporary artists are working with sound today. These artists approach sound from a variety of disciplines--visual arts, architecture, performance, computer programming and music--yet they share an interest in working with, rather than against or independent of, a given situation or environment. Their responses include architectural interventions, visualizations of inaudible sound, explorations of sound ricocheting within a gallery, and a range of field recordings--of bats, abandoned buildings in Chernobyl, bells in New York City and a factory in Taiwan. Published in conjunction with MoMA’s first major exhibition of sound art, Soundings presents an overview essay by Barbara London, Associate Curator in MoMA’s Department of Media and Performance Art; a recent history of sonic art by writer Anne Hilde Neset; and a section on each of the featured artists, featuring a brief interview and illustrated with installation shots, field photographs and documentation of performances. The diversity of these works echoes the complexities of the contested field of sound art, but together they posit something specific: that sound can elicit--from both the maker and the audience--modes of active, focused listening and a heightened relationship between interior and exterior space. A leading artist of her generation, Sam Taylor-Wood came to prominence in the mid-1990s as one of the YBAs (Young British Artists), alongside such artists as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, who were quickly propelled to celebrity status for their provocative and sensational works. Taylor-Wood has since become renowned for deftly manipulating the signature media of our age--photography, film and video--into compelling psychological portraits that tap into the ethos of our times. Documenting the artist's first major solo museum exhibition in the United States, this catalogue illustrates and discusses a selection of her most significant works from the mid-1990s to the present. Key pieces include the film "Hysteria" (1997), which portrays a woman's tumultuous descent from exhilaration to psychic disintegration; a selection from the 2002-2004 Crying Men photographs, which depict male film stars in moments of sorrow and introspection; "David" (2004), an hour-long video portrait of soccer icon David Beckham, sleeping; and the 2004 Self Portrait Suspended series. This first major monograph on the electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer was produced on the occasion of the 2007 Venice Biennale, where Lozano-Hemmer presented six interactive installations--becoming the first artist to officially represent Mexico at the Biennale. Born in Mexico City in 1967, Lozano-Hemmer studied Physical Chemistry at Concordia University in Montreal, and now uses his background in the sciences to create the large-scale, public-space installations for which he is known. Working with the concept of "relational architecture," Lozano-Hemmer's installations employ everything from robotics to sensors to cell phones and video projections to create social situations that alter the ways people relate to urban space. Describing his piece, "Subtitled Public" in an interview in this very nicely designed book, Lozano-Hemmer says, "I look for the 'special defects' that allow me to activate the imperfections, the disruptions; 'to disrupt' seems to be the most precise term for describing what I want to do."

In Atomic Time, sculptor, photographer and conceptual artist Jim Sanborn has combined his longstanding interests in invisible natural forces and secrecy, pairing together two separate but related projects: a series of photographs called Atomic Time and images of his latest work, the room-sized installation Critical Assembly. Inspired by the Manhattan Project, the first nuclear weapons program at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, Critical Assembly is a representation of what was once a secret site of government-sponsored research. The installation includes actual examples of electronic instruments, hardware, furniture, tools and materials from the Los Alamos Laboratory of the 1940s, 50s and 60s, which Sanborn acquired from retirees living in New Mexico who worked on the Project. The photographs in the Atomic Series are distinguished by an intense cobalt blue-like color, similar to the true color of radioactivity. Half of the series is of abstract images made by exposing sheet film to actual pieces of uranium ore; the other represents an assortment of radium-dial alarm clocks made between 1920 and 1950, acquired from regions around the Trinity Site in New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb exploded.

Today, video is a familiar tool at the artist's disposal. But to those who experimented with the technology in the 1960s and 70s--when affordable equipment became commercially available--the capabilities inherent in the medium were unknown. Vito Acconci, Joan Jonas and Bruce Nauman, among other American pioneers, used videotape to document and extend their performance work. Acconci, for one, produced conceptual, performance-based video work in the 70s that consisted of ruthless interrogations of the artist and viewer, as though defining the video medium were a matter of universal urgency. Video Acts provides a historical overview of video art created for display on a single monitor, with more than 100 pieces, dating from the mid-60s through 2000, including numerous landmarks in the development of this young medium by Marina Abramovic, Gilbert & George, Acconci, Jonas and Nauman, as well as more recent work by Tony Oursler, Darren Almond, Pipilotti Rist and others redefining the genre.

Space, time, love, violence, and the human body: these are but some of the themes explored in this provocative book of state-of-the-art video installations. In the related exhibition, which ran at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1995, the viewer entered the space and became part of what he or she observed.
