Wardell Milan (born 1978) earned a BFA in photography and painting in 2001 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and his MFA at Yale University in 2004. Right out of school in 2005 Milan emerged and was included in institutional exhibitions such as Greater New York at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and Frequency at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Milan has continued to challenge conventions of medium and message in his deeply personal and prolific work, which has been exhibited internationally. His work has been collected by The Studio Museum in Harlem; Denver Art Museum; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College, and Art Institute of Chicago. Milan is represented by David Nolan Gallery in New York. This is Milan's first monograph covering the breadth of his studio and exhibition practice over the course of the past decade and leading into the next.

Jason Middlebrook: My Landscape documents the American sculptor and painter’s exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, with spectacular installation shots and individual photos of his colorful abstract paintings on hardwood planks, and a major site-specific sculpture--a working fountain suspended from the museum’s rafters--as well as large-scale works on paper and a wall drawing. Carter E. Foster, former Curator and co-chair of the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is Curator of Drawings at the Whitney Museum of America Art. Carol Troyen has worked with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, for 27 years and has organized many exhibitions, including a famous one on Edward Hopper in 2007. She has lectured at museums across the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Sasha Nicholas is a Whitney Museum curatorial assistant. Luigi Sampietro is Professor of American Literature at the Università degli Studi di Milano. Goffredo Fofi is an Italian writer and journalist. Demetrio Paparoni is a curator and author of fine art books.

American painter Edward Hopper once said, "Maybe I am not very human--what I wanted to do was to paint sunlight on the side of a house." Indeed, Hopper's canvases delineate a new physics of Modern public space, in which the zones between people are not charged with responsiveness (affection, animosity, attraction) but with absolute indifference. Whether alone or grouped, Hopper's solitary figures bespeak Modern metropolitan conditions with a clarity that is deepened by his very specific ability to capture architecture, interior space and, of course, light. The legacy of this vision, coupled with Hopper's unique vocabulary, can be seen in the work of numerous artists today, who are also featured here. New York-based artist Peggy Preheim is known for her minutely detailed, miniscule graphite drawings on otherwise blank sheets of paper, creating a mood and atmosphere specific to her work. Her drawings are influenced by the small sixteenth century panel paintings of the Low Countries, while their lush black-and-white tonalities evoke early found photographs on which they are often based. Published on the occasion of Preheim's first retrospective, which originates at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut, this monograph is the artist's first and features rich reproductions of works from throughout her 20-year career, including sculpture and photography. Noted designer Daphne Geismar's elegant design perfectly captures the uncanny qualities of Preheim's style. The volume includes essays by curator Carter Foster and critic Gregory Volk, as well as a collection of poems and imaginary letters written in response to selected works by Aldrich Director Harry Philbrick.
