LACY SOTO | DATE 8/10/2023

Join us for the LA Art Book Fair 2023!

Join us August 10–13, 2023, in Booth J14 at Printed Matter's LA Art Book Fair 2023, where we will present book signings and discussions with artists and writers. (Scroll down for the complete listings.) This year our booth will have two points of focus: One, The Divine Feminine—concepts that explore the potency of a deep, elemental feminine power and the quality of corporeality that evokes a certain kind of planetary magic. Second is The Grassroot in LA—artists, writers, musicians who may be or have been living and working on the fringe of mainstream culture. We will have selection of out-of-print books, signed books and a Bruno Munari poster selection, along with our favorite new titles.

Artbook is proud to partner with DelMonico Books for the second year, co-hosting book signing at Booth K15.

KIM BEIL, FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 3 PM
Anonymous Objects: Inscrutable Photographs and the Unknown suggests that unidentifiable things in photographs point toward larger questions about the limits of knowledge. In a world that seems to give up images of itself more freely every day, there’s very little left to the unknown. Inscrutable photographs keep ambiguity alive. They make room for curiosity and wonder by resisting our facile attempts to know the world by naming it.

BINH DANH, FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 4 PM
Known for his innovative approach to alternative photographic processes, Binh Danh extends and reconsiders the pursuit of pioneering 19th-century photographers. For almost a decade, Danh has traveled across the American West, making daguerreotypes of scenic vistas on silver plates in a mobile darkroom he calls "Louis," after Louis Daguerre. Danh imbues this scenery with his distinctly personal perspective—namely, an attempt to negotiate his connection as a Vietnamese American with the landscape and history of the United States. This inaugural monograph features two volumes in a slipcase, bringing together all three bodies of work and a separate book of essays and memorabilia that serves to contextualize Danh's work. Preorder a signed copy of Binh Danh: The Enigma of Belonging here.

MARY VIRGINIA SWANSON, FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 5 PM
The first book to demystify the process of producing and publishing a book of photographs, Publish Your Photography Book, edited by Darius D. Himes and Mary Virginia Swanson, was first released in 2011 and subsequently sold out two editions. This highly anticipated third edition guides photo-based artists through the steps involved in publishing a book of their work. Preorder a signed copy here.

ALAKE SHILLING, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12: 12 PM
In the paintings and sculptures of Los Angeles–based artist Alake Shilling, cutesy characters and plush creatures travel through a saturated world where disco and Lisa Frank aesthetics collide, often in a grassy knoll or ocean swell. Preorder a signed copy of Alake Shilling: The Hippest Trip in America here.

The presentation will be accompanied by an expansive selection of works, images and contextual materials. After the presentation, John C. Welchman and Véronique Bourgoin will be at our booth. Preorder a signed copy of Royal Book Lodge here.

KAREN LOFGREN, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 3:30 PM
emBRUJAda gathers a selection of notes, dialogues and annotated works from LA-based artist Karen Lofgren. Considering works from an international practice, this compendium connects scientific fields to the spirit realm, leaving space for the unknown and the unknowable. The book presents an intimate space where rituals, history and mythology look to the construction of a greater consciousness over time.

GABRIELA HERSTIK, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 6 PM

JEFFREY GIBSON AND JENELLE PORTER, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, THE CLASSROOM, 3 PM; JENELLE PORTER, BOOTH K15, 4 PM
Jenelle Porter will be in conversation remotely with Jeffrey Gibson about the book An Indigenous Present. Conceived by Jeffrey Gibson and co-edited by Jenelle Porter, An Indigenous Present is a monumental gathering of more than 60 contemporary artists, photographers, musicians, writers and more, showcasing diverse approaches to Indigenous concepts, forms and mediums. This publication shows the increasingly visible and expanding field of Indigenous creative practice. It centers individual practices, while acknowledging shared histories, to create a visual experience that foregrounds diverse approaches to concept, form and medium as well as connection, influence, conversation and collaboration. An Indigenous Present foregrounds transculturalism over affiliation and contemporaneity over outmoded categories.
